The Sidney Prize recognizes Harvard law student papers related to animal law or policy that were written as part of an undergraduate or graduate level course, seminar, clinic, graduate degree program or independent study project and submitted either by themselves or faculty members who worked closely with them. The prize – worth $1,000 – is named in memory of Professor Sidney Thomas who taught from 1961 – 1985 as well as being an esteemed humanistic scholar.
The Society for the History of Technology offers various prizes for outstanding research in its field. One such prize, known as the Edelstein Prize, recognizes an exceptional book on technology history; this year it went to Stephan Miescher’s A Dam for Africa: The Construction of Modern Ghana (Indiana University Press 2022).

This year has seen some impressive intellectual heavyweights spar, and one particularly captivating debate between science and humanities scholars was between Steven Pinker and Leon Wieseltier over what role science should play in modern life–Pinker asserted that contrary to what humanities scholars say, scientific inquiry provides insight into nearly everything.
Peter Wood of The Weekly Standard also offered similar advice in an essay he recommended: Cathy Luhrmann’s “In Defense of Science” and David Brooks’s May 4, 2015 New York Times cover story on long-term harms caused by hook-up culture, two winning Sidney Prize essays.
